Inferring agent objectives at different scales of a complex adaptive system

چکیده

We introduce a framework to study the effective objectives at different time scales of financial market microstructure. The financial market can be regarded as a complex adaptive system, where purposeful agents collectively and simultaneously create and perceive their environment as they interact with it. It has been suggested that multiple agent classes operate in this system, with a non-trivial hierarchy of topdown and bottom-up causation classes with different effective models governing each level. We conjecture that agent classes may in fact operate at different time scales and thus act differently in response to the same perceived market state. Given scale-specific temporal state trajectories and action sequences estimated from aggregate market behaviour, we use Inverse Reinforcement Learning to compute the effective reward function for the aggregate agent class at each scale, allowing us to assess the relative attractiveness of feature vectors across different scales. Differences in reward functions for feature vectors may indicate different objectives of market participants, which could assist in finding the scale boundary for agent classes. This has implications for learning algorithms operating in this domain.

A review of agent-based modeling (ABM) concepts and some of its main applications in management science

We live in a very complex world where we face complex phenomena such as social norms and new technologies. To deal with such phenomena, social scientists often use reductionism approach where they reduce them to some lower-lever variables and model the relationships among them through a scheme of equations. This approach that is called equation based modeling (EBM) has some basic weaknesses in ...

The Paradox of Intervening in Complex Adaptive Systems; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”

This commentary addresses two points raised by Kitson and colleagues’ article. First, increasing interest in applying the Complexity Theory lens in healthcare needs further systematic work to create some commonality between concepts used. Second, our need to adopt a better understanding of how these systems organise so we can change the systems overall behaviour, creates a paradox. We seek to m...

Multi-agent System for Short and Long-term Power Market Simulations

In this paper we give an overview of the Electricity Market Complex Adaptive System (EMCAS) model. EMCAS uses the agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) technique to model the market participants in electricity markets as different agents with different strategies, risk preferences, and objectives. The complex operations of an electricity market can be simulated across several time horizons...

Discrimination of the Heart Ventricular and Atrial Abnormalities via a Wavelet-Aided Adaptive Network Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) Classifier

The aim of this study is to address a new feature extraction method in the area of the heart arrhythmia classification based on a metric with simple mathematical calculation called Curve-Length Method (CLM). In the presented method, curve length of the under study excerpted segment of signal is considered as an informative feature in which the effect of important geometric parameters of the ori...

Anti-Synchronization of Complex Chaotic T-System Via Optimal Adaptive Sliding-Mode and Its Application In Secure Communication

In this paper, an optimal adaptive sliding mode controller is proposed for anti-synchronization of two identical hyperchaotic systems. We use hyperchaotic complex T-system for master and slave systems with unknown parameters in the slave system. To construct the optimal adaptive sliding mode controller, first a simple sliding surface is designed. Then, the optimal adaptive sliding mode controll...
